Windsurfing

Not the best wave-jumping location in Britain but you’ld be hard pressed to find a better place to learn the basics or hang on to a big sail and pray for the best when it’s windy and the speed freaks come out.

The prevailing South Westerly comes over the bank of Chesil Beach and flattens out on the shallow, smooth waters of Portland Harbour where the windsurfers belt along parallel to the A354 causeway road to the Isle of Portland form Weymouth and, if you’re driving that road, it’s common practice to get yourself alongside a windsurfer and clock them to see how they’re doing, usually well into the 30mph+ zone!

On hand there’s plenty of parking, some you have to pay for and some you can get in for free, on the site of the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy theres the OTC, (the Official Test Centre) which is the windsurfing school and at the other end of the causeway there’s the Weymouth Watersports boys who can hire you equipment if you haven’t brought your own.
