Kearney Cottage is on the Isle of Portland which is a large lump of rock that has weathered storms for millions of years and harshly sticks out of the English Chanel in defiance of the natural forces that have tried to erode it. All this ensures that there is spectacular views and stark contrasts everywhere you look. On top of that there’s excellent light quality provided by the abundance of sky and sea.
This has made the Isle of Portland a magnet for many artists using many different formats and Photograpy is very popular amongst many.
Kearney Cottage is on an island for all intents and purposes and so there’s water pretty much all around and where there’s water….there’s Kayaking!
If you bring your own you can launch for free in many places and for the very experienced you can paddle right around the Isle of Portland from Chesil Cove to Portland Castle in Portland Harbour, make sure you plan your trip carefully and pay particular attention to the tide directions between Portland Bill Lighthouse and the Eastern edge of the Isle.
For beginners you couldn’t learn in a safer environment, in Portland Harbour, at the far end of the Causeway (Weymouth end) there’s Weymouth Water Sports (Richard 07743 346468) who will both teach you and hire you all the equipment that you need to enjoy just an hour on the water or the whole day.
Whatever your level get onto the water whenever you can, it’s what most people come to Kearney Cottage for. Enjoy.
